A Kearns home is likely a loss after flames tore through it Saturday afternoon.

Unified Fire Authority firefighters, whose station was just down the street from the house, responded to the blaze about 4:50 p.m. They found the one-story house, near 4500 W. 4900 South, "heavily involved with fire," said UFA Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.

Two parents and their adult son live at the house, but only the son was home when the fire started, Anderton said. He made it out by the time firefighters arrived.

Firefighters extinguished the flames within 15 to 20 minutes, but the house is "probably a complete loss, or very close," Anderton said.

Investigators believe the fire started accidentally near the fireplace.

The Utah Red Cross will help the displaced family, Anderton said.
