Real Salt Lake soccer team fans may soon be able to buy special license plates honoring the team, which also would raise money to help youth soccer.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 5-0 on Monday to endorse SB64 to create those license plates.

The sponsor, Sen. Luz Escamilla, D-Salt Lake City, said people who buy them would be required to make a $25 donation to a state account that would make grants to organizations that help "youth soccer, build communities, and promote environmental sustainability."

Mary Van Minde, executive director of the Real Salt Lake Foundation, said it funds such groups. She predicted that since Real Salt Lake has 15,000 season ticket holders, "the license plates will be popular."

The committee also endorsed SB69 to allow special license plates to raise money for children with heart disease. It would also require a $25 donation to a state fund that would make grants to programs "that provide awareness, education, support services and advocacy for and on behalf of children with heart disease."

That bill is sponsored by Sen. David Hinkins, R-Orangeville.
