Believe it or not, the ASCAP Music Café hasn't always been part of the Sundance Film Festival.
In fact, live music showcases weren't as prevalent as they are today, according to Loretta Muñoz, ASCAP assistant vice president and Sundance ASCAP Music Café producer.
"Our very humble beginnings was more like 'Let's try this as an experiment' pitch to Sundance," Muñoz said during an interview with The Park Record. "Way back then, it was not prominent at the festival, except for opening and closing parties and attached to the awards. So, it was our plea to have music at the film festival, because music is such a major part of filmmaking and [we] wanted to expand that and expose directors and filmmakers to music."

ASCAP Music Café
The ASCAP Music Café will offer live music through Friday, Jan. 29, at 625 Main St., during the Sundance Film Festival. The café is open to all Sundance Film Festival credential holders as space allows.

Sting in concert
Sting — the singer, composer, instrumentalist and former frontman for The Police — will perform a set with special guest J. Ralph, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Sting and J. Ralph (who has garnered back-to-back Oscar nominations for his songs from the Sundance environmental documentaries "Chasing Ice" in 2014 and "Racing Extinction" last year) are performing in support of "Jim: The James Foley Story," director Brian Oakes' documentary about his childhood friend, a journalist killed by terrorists representing the so-called Islamic State.
More artists also added recently to the Music Café line-up are: Genevieve (indie-pop singer-songwriter), Rachael Kilgour (folk singer-songwriter), The Lonely Wild (indie-folk band), Moors (band of rapper/singer/actor Keith Stanfield), Thao and the Get Down Stay Down (alt-folk/rock group) and Naomi Wachira (Kenyan-born folksinger).
