Park City • Think of the Waldorf Astoria's 2016 Arctic Ice Lounge as Disney's "Frozen" for adults.

The lounge on an outdoor terrace at the luxury Park City hotel includes more than 15 hand-carved sculptures, from tables to place a flute of Champagne to a giant throne where guests can sit for selfies. It's open daily from 2 to 8 p.m.

"The majority of sculptures we do are in the 2- to 5-foot range for weddings and parties," said Edward Fraze, general manager of Iceworks Inc. But occasionally the Salt Lake City business gets asked to do something different, like the interactive ice lounge.

"When people can interact with the sculpture it's a lot more intriguing for them to see and for us to design," Fraze said. "Coming in direct contact with the pieces makes it very experiential."

Ice bars and lounges have become popular at winter resorts throughout the country. There are even a few year-round ice bars. The Mandalay Place and Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas have indoor bars where everything — the walls, the bar, the seats and even the cocktail glasses — is made of ice.

It took Fraze four days to complete the Waldorf Astoria ice lounge: one day to bring in the ice blocks and three more to sculpt. He and another carver worked 10-12 hours a day to complete all the pieces in time for the Sundance Film Festival, running through Sunday.

The largest pieces are icebergs, standing 11 feet tall. "When it snows, the icebergs look even better," said Fraze. The smallest are several 3-foot-tall penguins, the mascot of Moët Chandon Champagne, which served as inspiration for the ice lounge where Champagne and Champagne-based cocktails are available for purchase.

A 10-foot-tall throne, carved in the shape of a sitting penguin, is the favorite, he said. "When people sit in it, it looks like the penguin is holding them in his lap."

Ryker Brown, executive chef at Powder, the hotel's signature restaurant adjacent to the lounge, says guests should walk around the ice carvings, enjoy a cocktail and then head inside for warmth and dinner. The restaurant has a new menu that includes a creamy gluten-free clam chowder ($14.25), a "melt-in-your mouth" pork belly appetizer ($15.25) and the popular sous vide fried chicken with orzo "mac and cheese" ($38.25).

For dessert, head back outside to the fire pit near the pool, where you can roast marshmallows and enjoy complimentary s'mores.

Plan this adult adventure soon, as the lounge is expected to last only a few more weeks. "It's in a good spot that doesn't get a lot of sun," Brown said. "We're hoping that we can see it through Valentine's Day, but who knows if the weather will cooperate."

Last year's version melted quickly thanks to unseasonably high temperatures, he added. "It was 50 degrees [at] this time last year."
