A Lehi man is suspected of taking pictures of a boy in a church bathroom and destroying his cell phone after police tried to interview him.

Jeffery Aaron Young, 39, was arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of voyeurism and tampering with evidence, confirmed Lehi police Lt. Toby Peterson.

Police began investigating voyeurism reports in November, when a young boy — under age 10, Peterson said — said he thought he saw a camera placed under the restroom stall at an LDS church at 3200 N. 600 East.

"He thought maybe the guy was taking a picture," Peterson said.

In December, members of the church gave matching descriptions of a man behaving oddly in the restroom, Peterson said. He was seen leaving the restroom as a group of boys was entering, and then immediately following them back into the restroom. Later he was seen sitting on a toilet in a restroom stall with his pants up, Peterson said.

Members of the church recognized the man as Young, a member of a neighboring LDS congregation, Peterson said.

Officers asked Young for his cell phone, but he would not provide it, Peterson said. When they returned with a search warrant on Wednesday, Young eventually took them to a trash bin in American Fork, where he had thrown the phone away, Peterson said. He had used a wrench to smash the phone one day earlier, put the pieces in a plastic bag and filled the bag with water, Peterson said.

"The phone is being sent to a lab for processing, where we expect we'll be able to recover the images," Peterson said.

Officers also have interviewed witnesses who reported Young made statements consistent with the allegations from the congregation, Peterson said.

Young, however, has not said whether the accusations are true.

"He's given us minimal details," Peterson said.
