An early Christmas morning fire left a West Valley City family of nine without a home.

All members of the family — four adults and five children — escaped injury as flames poured out the second-floor windows of the split-level entry house at 4240 S. Bluebird Drive (3820 West).

Public safety dispatchers took a 911 call reporting the blaze at 4:15 a.m. Friday, and when West Valley City Fire Department crews arrived, they found the home billowing flames and smoke.

Firefighters initially focused on stopping the blaze from spreading to neighboring residences, then knocked down the fire and entered to mop up remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire — including whether the home had working smoke detectors — was being investigated.

Initial damage estimates topped $100,000, with the interior of the house left a charred shell.

No injuries were reported, and the Utah Red Cross was assisting the family with food, clothing and shelter needs.
