A Layton man has been charged with manslaughter for hitting and killing an 18-month-old girl with his car.

Aaron Joe Burlison, 25, was charged Friday in 2nd District Court with manslaughter, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of possession or use of a controlled substance, which the charges specified as marijuana.

On Friday, Burlison's attorney filed a not-guilty plea and requested the case be set for a pretrial and jury trial.

On July 27, Lexie Smith was run over by a car in the parking lot of the Canyon Rim Apartments near 6045 S. Ridgeline Drive, in South Ogden. The girl was rushed to Ogden Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to a South Ogden police news release.

Lexie's family set up a GoFundMe site to defray medical and funeral costs. Donations from more than 200 people exceeded the fundraiser's $4,000 goal by almost four-fold, ending at $14,295.
