A hazardous-materials spill at an industrial plant has shut down a Summit County road.

The North Summit Fire District reported the spill, at 3303 Chalk Creek Road, about 7:45 p.m. Monday. The road stretches from Coalville to the Utah-Wyoming border.

Citation Oil and Gas Corp. noticed the break in the underground pipeline after the chemicals bubbled to the surface, said fire district spokesman Tyler Rowser. The company shut down the pipeline, which leaked an estimated 200 barrels of gasoline, butane and propane, the fire district reported.

Rowser told KUTV that "the smell from the spill is quite strong, so officials are monitoring the homes and weather conditions to make sure residents there are safe to stay home."

Besides hazmat crews, the Summit County Health Department is also at the scene. Cleanup begins Tuesday morning, said Rowser, who was unsure of how long it would take.
