This year's required Thanksgiving holiday gear in Utah: Snow boots.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning — effective from noon Wednesday through noon Thursday — for much of the state, with snow accumulations of up to 12 inches in some places.

Forecasters say a mix of rain and snow is expected to begin falling Wednesday afternoon, changing to snow by evening. That could make for messy driving conditions during the evening commute and for holiday travelers.

Wednesday is typically the heaviest travel day of the year on Utah roadways.

"You should allow more time to make it to your destination, no matter where you'll be heading," forecaster Eric Schoening says in a NWS YouTube video.

Forecasters predict as much as 6 inches of snow to accumulate along the northern Wasatch Front and in the Cache Valley. Up to 4 inches is predicted for the west desert area south of Interstate 80 and up to 14 inches may accumulate near the Idaho border.

The Wasatch mountains and the western Uintas could get as much as 12 inches of snow, forecasters say.

The storm's impact will be minimal in central and southern Utah, the NWS said.

However, the agency has also issued a wind advisory for southwest Utah. Winds between 20 to 35 mph are expected with gusts as high as 55 mph in some places, forecasters say. The advisory is in effect through 4 p.m.
