Los Angeles • A utility company trying to stop a massive month-long natural gas leak says it intends to use a solution to mask the stench that is making residents ill in an area of Los Angeles.

SoCalGal officials told county supervisors Tuesday the substance is safe and would neutralize the rotten smell that has led to more than 660 complaints to the air board.

Porter Ranch residents say they have concerns about the use of Odex, a biodegradable solution made from food-grade products.

Matt Pakucko says the community doesn't want to be guinea pigs in an experiment about whether the substance is safe.

The gas company says it could take three more months to control the leak that began Oct. 23.

The utility has begun relocating neighbors who have complained about the smell.
