Utah gardening program earns grant

Wasatch Community Gardens has received a $1,000 grant from Goodness for Gardens, which recognizes youth development programs. It is sponsored by Just BARE Chicken, a brand of natural, antibiotic-free and organic chicken. In all, the company awarded more than $18,500 to eight community gardens around the country.

Breakfast with Santa

Sheraton Hotel, 150 W. 500 South, Salt Lake City • Parents and their children can enjoy a brunch buffet and meet Santa on Saturday Dec. 5, 12 and 19 inside the hotel's 5th Street Grill. Seatings available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $37.95 for adults and $22.50 for children 3 to 13. Kid's 3 and under are free. The brunch buffet includes breakfast items, an omelet station, seafood, prime rib and roast turkey, sides and desserts. Broadway Center Theatre, 111 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City • The annual Waffles and Wassail event, sponsored by the Salt Lake Film Society, will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. Guests can make waffles and meet Santa, then see a free holiday movie at 10 a.m.

Sparkling wine Festival

From prosecco and cava to a brut rosé, bubbles are the focus of the Sparkling Wine Festival and educational class sponsored by The LaSalle and Trio Restaurant groups. During December, sparkling wine suggestions that pair with specials will be offered at each restaurant. Prices vary. After ordering the sparklers, have your official festival passport stamped by staff. The first 50 people to hand in passports stamped by five of the seven participating restaurants will be able to attend a VIP New Year's celebration at Under Current Bar. In addition to the festival, beverage director Jim Santangelo and Under Current's general manager Amy Eldredge will host an educational forum on sparkling wines. The evening includes a discussion, wine tasting and small bites.
