A federal fugitive with alleged Utah gang ties was arrested after fleeing on foot from a traffic stop early Friday morning in Taylorsville.

Inoke Vimahi, 34, allegedly ran after a Unified Police officer pulled over his car and a following SUV near 5400 South and Redwood Road about 1 a.m.

UPD Lt. Lex Bell said that UPD's Metro Gang Unit had been watching a nearby address when Vimahi and a woman, also 34, left in the two vehicles and stopped at a gas station. The woman, found to have outstanding warrants of her own, was arrested at the scene.

Bell said that Vimahi initially tried to hide in his car, then ran when police approached. He was chased down on foot and taken into custody not far from the scene.

Vimahi, whose criminal record includes a 2003 robbery conviction, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail. He was being held without bail on a federal hold order, and a state warrant alleging violation of his parole on an earlier aggravated robbery conviction.

Vimahi was most recently released from prison on May 5, then the warrant was issued for his arrest on Oct. 22 for violating terms of his parole, according to Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams.
