James Lawrence to be featured speaker at broadband summit

James Lawrence, a Guinness world record holder for most triathlons in a year, will be the featured speaker Wednesday at the Broadband Tech Summit at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo.

The Governor's Office of Economic Development and its Utah Broadband Project are staging the event, which also will feature talks by officials from the School, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Broadband USA and United Parcel Service.

"Broadband plays a critical role in building strong communities and sustainable economies," said GOED Executive Director Val Hale.

Paiute tribe receives two grants to support business development

The Paiute Indian Tribe has received two grants totaling $81,200 to support business and economic development from the U.S. Department of Agricultures rural development program.

The Cedar Band of Paiutes, based in Cedar City, will get $31,600 to study the feasibility of developing a travel plaza/trading post. The Kanosh Band of Paiutes, will receive $49,600 to provide technical assistance, training and a computerized financial system for an RV park.

DownEast Basics contributes to fight against breast cancer

Impacted directly by the disease, Salt Lake City-based clothier DownEast Basics is contributing this month to the fight against breast cancer.

Through Oct. 31, DownEast will donate 50 percent of sales — up to $5,000 — of its "Live for Pink" tee shirts to selected recipients who are being treated for breast cancer. And through Oct. 16, the store is inviting people to nominate themselves or somebody else suffering from breast cancer for a $500 grant and a wardrobe and gift package valued at $1,000.

Eight recipients will be selected by a group of Salt Lake community leaders, said store spokeswoman Amanda Apple.

She noted that Claire Freedman, mother of company founders Jonathan, Bill and Charlie Freedman is a breast-cancer survivor, as is Lilli Murphy, wife of CEO Klane Murphy.

AAA service center to bring more than 700 jobs to Utah

More than 700 jobs are coming to Davis County with the grand opening last week of a "member service center" in Clearfield to serve AAA members in Utah, Nevada and northern California.

Officials from Clearfield, the Davis County Chamber of Commerce, the Governors Office of Economic Development and the state insurance commissioner's office participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the call center at 888 S. 2000 East.

AAA Utah spokeswoman Rolayne Fairclough said the service center is expected to handle more than 4 million calls for emergency road service each year.

Levitin Group retained by Royal Resorts Caribbean

Levitin Group, a training and sales consulting company for the resort industry, has been retained by Royal Resorts Caribbean to help the staff at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina in St. Maarten.

The Park City-based company provides more than 350 video-based lessons in sales, marketing, motivation, leadership and personal development. Other Levitin clients include Breckenridge Grand Vacations, Club Intrawest, International Cruise & Excursions, Legendary Preferred Destinations and Silverpoint Vacation Club.
