Former Utah State quarterback Mike Canales was the news over the weekend.

Canales, who was known as Chico when played for the Aggies from 1981-83, is the offensive coordinator at North Texas State. But he was named the interim head coach after Dan McCarney was fired following a 66-7 loss to Portland State on Saturday.

The Mean Green is 0-5.

In 2010, Canales was the interim head coach at North Texas for five games after the school fired Todd Dodge. He guided the Mean Green to a 2-3 record.

Oddly, a Cache Valley high school product played a role in the coaching situation at North Texas. Quarterback Alex Kuresa, who attended Mountain Crest, threw three touchdowns and guided an offense that gained 670 total yards in Portland State's lopsided win over the Mean Green.
