Unified Police officers rushed to the scene of a Magna residential burglary just in time to nab the suspect as he attempted to flee.

The 911 call had come about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday from a woman and her son, after they heard someone trying to break down their carport door.

UPD officers were in the area and arrived within minutes of the call, finding the 21-year-old suspect just as he attempted to run from the area, and taking him into custody at gunpoint.

Officers also discovered the carport door trashed, with its dead bolt lock bent.

Neither the woman, who requires oxygen and works from home, nor her adult son, who was home sick, were injured.

After waiving his Miranda rights, the suspect — an ex-con on probation from 2014 felony aggravated assault and fleeing police convictions — allegedly admitted to having used a hammer in his attempt to enter the home.

He was being held in lieu of $12,000 bail at the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of felony burglary and probation violation counts, as well as a misdemeanor criminal mischief count.
