A suspect was critically injured when a Sandy police officer shot him Friday evening.

The man, identified Saturday as Ivan Kaumans, 56, remained in stable condition, according to the Murray Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.

At about 5:30 p.m., police were responding to a call about an armed-domestic-violence incident at 197 E. Corrie Circle (about 9400 South), said Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger.

"The suspect was reported to be 'beating' his wife and son," according to a Sandy police news release. "He was also reported to have a rifle by the front door of the home. Officers received updated information the suspect was attempting to break down a bedroom door where the wife and son were hiding."

When three officers arrived, they confronted the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, in the front yard, Carriger said.

One of the officers shot the suspect once, hitting the suspect in his arm and chest, according to the news release. The suspect was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition.

No one else, including officers, was hurt.

Per state protocol, a different law enforcement agency will investigate the shooting.
