Police on Sunday identified a man killed when the pickup truck he was in, having allegedly fled the scene of a convenience store beer theft, crashed in Ogden.

Ogden police Lt. Nate Cline said that 21-year-old Daniel Hernandez had been confirmed as the victim. The name of the second man, who was critically injured in the 10:40 p.m. Saturday crash, was still being withheld due to the ongoing investigation.

Cline said that about 10:35 p.m. Saturday, two males allegedly entered the 7-Eleven store at 803 24th St. in Ogden and took beer without paying. The suspects jumped into a white pickup truck and sped away, clipping another vehicle as they left.

About five minutes later, the same pickup crashed near the 1300 block of Valley Drive after failing to negotiate a sharp curve. The truck hit a guardrail, ejecting its occupants.

Paramedics pronounced Hernandez dead at the scene; the second man was rushed to an undisclosed local hospital.

Cline said that both speed and alcohol were believed factors in the crash.
