One person died Monday morning when a Utah Transit Authority Trax train hit a truck in Midvale.

Howard Glenn Hillam, 80, of West Jordan, likely died on impact in the 10:52 a.m. collision, according to the Unified Police Department. He was driving a Ford F-250 on 8000 South near 100 East.

As of 4 p.m., Unified Police Department Lt. Lex Bell said, the north and south Trax near the scene remained closed and would be closed for several more hours. The collision derailed the train and damaged the rails. Blue Line passengers can take a bus from Midvale Station to Sandy Station and vice versa.

Hillam was driving west at about 35 mph when his Ford smashed through the safety arms, which were down at the crossing, Bell said. The southbound train, traveling about 55 mph, struck the truck near its center, Bell said.
