About six hours of patient negotiations finally led to the surrender of a shotgun-wielding, suicidal man to Weber County sheriff's deputies and SWAT officers early Tuesday.

Sheriff's Lt. Lane Findlay said the peaceful end came about 1:30 a.m., despite the man firing the shotgun twice from his pickup truck during the standoff near the Pilot Travel Center, on 12th Street in Marriott-Slaterville. No injuries were reported, and law officers did not return fire.

The 42-year-old man, whose identity was not released, was taken to the hospital for mental health evaluation. The county attorney's office will screen any possible charges.

The standoff began about 7:30 p.m. Monday after a 911 call came in from the man's family, concerned that he was about to take his life.

Deputies located the man's truck and pulled him over. However, he refused to come out. Seeing he was armed, deputies established a perimeter and called in Ogden-Metro SWAT.

The truck's engine reportedly overheated at one point, billowing smoke into the cab, so officers shot out the back window with a bean bag shotgun round to prevent the man from suffocating.

The man reportedly fired the two rounds into the air about 11 p.m..

Tire spikes were laid in the path of the pickup early on to prevent the suspect from leaving. Police also closed down 12th Street from Interstate 15 to 1900 West during the standoff.
