A judge on Monday granted a protective order to a University of Utah English professor who was allegedly held hostage for hours and shot by her husband before he let her go.

The order bars Valentin Dulla Santarromana from the Millcreek residence, near 700 East and 3300 South, he shared with Jennifer Andrus, and prohibits him from contacting her or seeing the couple's three children.

Signed by 3rd District Court Commissioner Michelle Blomquist after a short hearing, the order also prohibits Santarromana — who is currently behind bars for the shooting episode — from going to the childrens' schools, Andrus' work, or to the homes of some of her family and friends.

Andrus, 42, filed the protective order on Aug. 17 — five days before her husband allegedly ambushed her at their home when she and a friend went to the residence to retrieve some belongings.

She appeared in court Monday wearing a purple scarf wrapped around her head, her right eye bandaged and an apparent cast on her left arm. She walked slowly with the aide of a cane and there was a visible purple bruise on her left cheek.

On Aug. 22, police say Santarromana held Andrus hostage for roughly three hours, dragging her to the basement where he shot her before surrendering to police. A SWAT team forced its way into the home after hearing shots and say Santarromana fired more than a dozen rounds at officers.

Andrus lost an eye and sustained wounds to her legs and arm, police have said.

Her friend, Jai Hogue, also 42, was allegedly shot four times by Santarromana when she tried to enter the residence to help Andrus.

Police have said Hogue, a longtime librarian at the Open Classroom in Salt Lake City, was shot in the head and lungs and also suffered a severed spine. Her condition has altered between critical and extremely critical.

Santarromana, 37, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation attempted aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and illegal discharge of a firearm. He is being held on $1 million bail.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney's office is screening criminal charges.
