North Summit Braves

North Summit coach Devin Smith enters the season with great optimism. If he can find a good quarterback, the Braves could be a state title contender.

"We have the potential to be very good this year," said Smith. "We have most of our defense returning, most of our offensive line and one of our running backs returning. I feel like our strength is the line on both sides of the ball. We have a good amount of experience, size and work ethic on the lines."

A key to a successful season may be at quarterback, where Braxten Northrup and Chris Richins are competing for the starting job.

"Our defense will be the strength of our team," said Smith. "We have a lot of experience there, with tough kids who are willing to fly around to the football."

Last year's record • 8-3, 4-2 in league play; lost in state quarterfinals.

Key returners • Key returning players include Mason Richins, Braden Richins, Holden Jones, Zac Simister, Carter Wardrop, Luke Keisel and Jace Hirzel.

Player to watch • Running back Tristan Woolstenhulme looms as the team's go-to offensive player.

Biggest hole • With the graduation of three-year quarterback starter Ryan McMichael, the Braves will be looking for a starting quarterback.

Need to know • This is the 89th season for North Summit football and the school's last playing on a natural surface. Turf will be installed next year.
