An Indiana man crashed his glider into a tree near Logan-Cache Airport. David Abbott, 63, was flying with a group of glider pilots over the mountains east of Cache Valley when his aircraft hit an air pocket at low altitude, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff's Office. Despite trying to recover, Abbott hit a tree and crashed into the mountains at about 3 p.m.

The man's craft, like most gliders, has no engine and was towed into flight behind a powered aircraft.

Abbott, of Rome, Ind., injured his back in the crash. He left the craft after a short time trapped inside, according to the release.

Another glider pilot still in the air helped direct rescuers to the crash site, which is inside U.S. Forest Service boundaries about 20 miles east of the Logan-Cache Airport, the release said.

Abbott was taken to Logan Regional Hospital to treat his injuries, which were not life threatening.

The Forest Service, Cache County deputies, Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
