A Utah Highway Patrol trooper suffered serious injuries when a car struck him as he was investigating a crash alongside Interstate 15 near Cedar City.

The trooper was inspecting a Ford passenger car that had hydroplaned and struck a cable barrier near the highway about 3 p.m. when a second car, a black BMW, collided with the Ford. The BMW pushed the Ford on top of the trooper, Cedar City police wrote.

Crews required heavy machinery to lift the car off the trooper. He was taken to Valley View Medical Center in serious condition, police wrote.

Investigators believe heavy rainfall and pooling water contributed to the crash.

Cedar City police did not release the name of the officer.
