Firefighters are gaining the advantage on the Scipio Summit wildfire.

As of 11 p.m. Saturday, crews had achieved 60 percent containment on the 184-acre fire, which is burning just northwest of the Millard County town of Scipio. The flames have destroyed several power poles, but were not threatening any other structures.

The fire likely began about Monday, when lightning moved through the area, said Jason Curry, spokesman for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. However, it only grew large enough for people to notice it on Friday, he added.

As the flames spread Friday evening, they temporarily forced the Utah Department of Transportation to shut down Interstate 15 at Scipio for about two hours.

About 60 personnel were fighting the fire, including the Lone Peaks Hotshots crew, with the help of single-engine air tankers dropping retardant on the flames, Curry said. The fire was primarily burning through heavy sagebrush and juniper trees.
