Utah's staff ran a dozen camps this month, including six of the so-called satellite camps that are all the rage, and held their final staff meeting of summer last week.
Now, as many depart for well-earned vacations, comes a little payoff.
Two SoCal targets committed over the weekend at Utah-run camps, and Monday night brought a verbal pledge from Huntsville, Texas' Jay Griffin.
The burner — his best time in the 200 meters is a 21.17 — received an offer from Utah the day after the school's Houston camp last Tuesday, Griffin told The Tribune on Monday night, but he was first spotted by safeties coach Morgan Scalley at one of last season's practices.
According to apparently incomplete statistics on MaxPreps, in seven games he caught 24 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 226 yards and another score. He also returned two kickoffs for a total of 115 yards.
Griffin, who answered most questions with a polite "Yes, sir" or "No, sir," did allow that he'd like to set the state scoring record this year, and that he'd prefer to play wide receiver in college.
He also holds an offer from Central Florida, but said he's shutting down his recruitment. He's not sure yet what he plans to study at the U.

• Pima CC defensive end Kendall Huey has enrolled at the U. and joined the team. It's not a surprise — we reported that was his intention in January — but Huey didn't sign on Signing Day and will walk on initially, likely earning a scholarship and counting toward Utah's 2016 initial class. Huey's teammate, safety Markell Simmons, is on Utah's radar for the 2016 class, as well, but he'll play another season at Pima. He retweeted a report Monday that he'd received an offer from Florida State.
• Three-star California 2016 wideout Grant Porter intends to announce his decision Wednesday night at 8 p.m. MT, choosing between Utah, Boise State and Washington State.
• Utah extended an offer to another quarterback at San Clemente High, alma mater of Travis Wilson and USC commit Sam Darnold, who was said to seriously consider Utah over the hometown team. The latest offer goes to 2017 quarterback Jack Sears, who seems to be Darnold's heir apparent and met with Utah coaches at their Long Beach camp. San Clemente offensive lineman Tucker Scott was an early member of Utah's 2016 class.
• As Kyle Whittingham said was expected, junior college wideout Deniko Carter wasn't able to qualify and tweeted that he will attend Division II Texas A&M Commerce. Junior college cornerback Cory Butler is expected to join the team for fall camp, but he's still finishing a couple of classes. Huey and safety Jordan Fogal may be joined by another junior college "push-forward" this fall, but we'll report on that if and when it's official, likely in the next week or so.
