A Unified Fire crew have pulled a man's body from a river in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

About 9:05 a.m. Sunday, two hikers walking down the canyon saw the man, John Thorpe, stuck on some debris in the middle of the river, near 5000 East, said Unified Police Detective Jared Richardson. The hikers thought he might be unconscious, Richardson said.

While one of them stayed near Thorpe, the other went downstream and flagged down a cyclist to call 911.

When rescuers arrived and retrieved the man from the water, they found that he was dead.

Investigators later determined that Thrope was riding a motorcycle down the canyon and crashed. It's unclear whether Thrope was already dead when the hikers found him, Richardson said.

Police investigators are working with the state medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
