A Salt Lake City police officer shot and wounded a man who reportedly lunged at him with a knife late Saturday.

The 29-year-old man was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Just before midnight Saturday, the officer was near 210 S. Rio Grande St. when he heard a woman scream and saw the man threatening her with a knife, according to a police news release.

"The officer gave commands for the man to drop the knife," the release read. "The man lunged at the officer and was shot."

The woman and the officer were not hurt.

Per protocol, the officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Unified Police Department's investigation.

Investigators don't have body-camera footage of the shooting, but there were about 40 people in the area at the time, said police Sgt. Robin Heiden.

"There are over a dozen witnesses, that we know of, that saw what happened," Heiden said. There could also be surveillance footage, she added.

If any witnesses haven't talked to police, the UPD requests they call 385-468-9819; the case number is 15-101357.
