Traffic was closed for a time at 3000 East and 6900 South on Monday, because of a suspected explosive device found in the parking lot at the nearby U.S. Forest Service building.

But the Cottonwood Heights police department reported a little after noon Monday that the area was safe and the roads were open again.

Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Corbett Ford said he was told the device was an explosive used for avalanche control that appeared to have been unintentionally left by an employee — but not for any nefarious reason.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Dan Brown said the bomb squad responded to a report of a suspicious package, but deemed it not dangerous. Brown said at about 11:40 a.m. that officials were still investigating how it came to be there.
