Brian Dale was approved as Salt Lake City's fire chief Tuesday by the Salt Lake City Council.

Dale had served as deputy chief under former Chief Kurt Cook, who retired last month after 30 years.

Dale's appointment was approved by the City Council on a 5-1 vote. The lone dissent came from Council Chairman Luke Garrott who said he was disappointed the Becker administration hadn't conducted a national search for Cook's replacement.

Dale began working for the fire department in 1986.
