A man was in critical condition after he was reportedly stabbed in a fight outside the Salt Lake City homeless shelter.

The victim and the suspect — both men in their 40s — got into an argument Monday that escalated to a fight at 427 W. 200 South, which is by The Road Home shelter, said police Lt. Mike Ross. The victim walked away after the fight, until he realized he was bleeding.

The man had been stabbed at least once in his side, Ross said. He sat down on a chair that was on the sidewalk until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was in critical condition.

The suspect fled the scene but officers found him a few blocks away, Ross said. He's in custody and detectives were interviewing him.

Police searched the area, but could not find the weapon.
