An 84-year-old Salt Lake County man was killed Wednesday after he lost control of his small pickup truck and it flipped after crashing into a fence at a county fire station.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of 1900 East and 3300 South, Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen said.

The driver was headed eastbound on 3300 South when he crossed into the westbound lanes, went up onto the sidewalk and hit some rocks outside of Unified Fire Station 106, before crossing a patch of grass and plowing into a fence on the east side of the station. The truck flipped on its top after the collision, Hansen said.

It wasn't immediately clear why the driver lost control. An autopsy is being conducted to determine whether he suffered a medical problem, Hansen said.

Investigators do not believe the man, who was alone in the truck, was wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not immediately release the man's name pending notification of family. Hansen said the man appears to live in the area of the fire station and may have been driving home.

Firefighters and paramedics were out on a call and not at the station at the time of the crash, Hansen said.
