An off-duty Unified Police officer was speeding late at night with no headlights on when he struck a 13-year-old girl in 2012, her family claimed in a lawsuit filed Monday.

The girl's father, Allen Handy, alleges that Unified Police officer Michael Prettyman was driving his police truck away from an Olympus High School basketball game about 11 p.m. Jan. 27, 2012, when the collision occurred.

The girl, identified only as "Q.H.," was crossing a road near 3000 East and 4500 South, to speak with her father, the lawsuit states.

"The officer was driving well above the posted speed limit and with his headlights off despite the darkness of the hour," the complaint alleges.

The truck struck the girl, breaking her pelvis and causing a concussion and abrasions, the lawsuit claims.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal declined to comment on pending litigation.
