A security guard accidentally shot and wounded a fellow guard in South Jordan.

After a firearms training session Saturday morning, a group of security guards went to another firearms training facility at 859 W. South Jordan Parkway. There, the guards were preparing to clean their weapons, and one of them failed to make sure his gun was clear of live rounds, according to a police news release.

Just before 9 a.m., the gun went off, striking another 24-year-old guard in the abdomen.

The man was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. He's since been stabilized and is expected to survive, according to the release.

"This appears to be a tragic accident," said Master Officer Samuel Winkler in a statement. "It's also a reminder that firearms need to be treated as if they are always loaded and to use a double-check system when handling firearms for transport and cleaning."
