SOFTBALL • Host Utah swept Southern Utah, 6-1 and 10-1, in a noncoference doubleheader on Tuesday at Dumke Family Stadium.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Hannah Flippen and Kate Dickman hit back-to-back doubles for Utah's first run, and Kristen Stewart added an RBI single later in the frame. Dickman was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the opener.

Pitcher Katie Donovan (9-5) earned the win by throwing six shutout innings. She gave up just four hits, struck out six and walked none while leading the Utes (24-13).

Utah pitcher Miranda Viramontes (10-6) earned the win in the nightcap by working four scoreless innings.

Bridget Castro was 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the Utes at the plae.

BYU 13, Utah State 2 • In Logan, BYU catcher Sydney Broderick was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer, and right fielder McKenzie St. Clair was 3 for 4 with a two-run homer as the Cougars (22-8) cruised to the victory in their final tuneup before beginning West Coast Conference play.

USU's Sarah Chow was 2 for 3 and drove in both of the Aggies' runs. USU fell to 11-22.

The Cougars will begin league play Friday at Saint Mary's.
