A Logan man flying an experimental plane Saturday morning made an emergency landing after having engine problems but was unharmed, Cache County Sheriff D. Chad Jensen said.

The pilot, John Kerr, 74, left the Logan Cache Airport on his home-built single-wing aircraft and was flying solo over the Trenton area, northwest of Logan, when the engine began to sputter, Jensen said.

Just after Kerr banked the aircraft back toward Logan Cache Airport, the sheriff said, the engine seized and the plane started a quick descent.

Kerr made a hard landing in an open hay field at approximately 4800 West and Highway 218, significantly damaging the plane's landing gear and front end, according to Jensen.
