Police are looking for at least three male suspects in the brutal weekend beating of a downtown Salt Lake City nightclub's bouncer.

The bouncer apparently came to the defense of two female customers being harassed by the suspects at Maxwell's East Coast Eatery, 357 S. Main St., about 2 a.m. Sunday when he was attacked. He remained in the hospital Monday in serious condition, Salt Lake City police Sgt. Robin Heiden said.

SLCPD detectives on Monday were reviewing video security camera footage from the bar and restaurant in hopes of identifying the men.

The bouncer, having determined two male patrons were out of line, approach them and told them to leave. Instead, one man attacked the bouncer, soon joined by two more. Possibly joined by others, the suspects then dragged the bouncer outside the bar and continued to beat him.

Heiden could not confirm reports that the assailants may have claimed to be off-duty military personnel, but said there was no doubt the case was one of felony-level aggravated assault by at least three suspects.

"We are taking this matter very seriously," she said.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
