A kitten that was badly burned on its back and neck is on the road to recovery, thanks to Paws for Life Utah, a Heber City-based organization that arranged for the animal's treatment.

The tough tabby, which has been given the name Trinket, was brought to the Northern Utah Valley Animal Shelter in Lindon in January and rescued by Paws for Life later that month. The nonprofit organization operates the Heber Valley Animal Shelter and finds homes for abandoned animals.

The group's volunteers — who do not know whether the burn was intentional or accidental — knew the cat needed immediate medical attention to increase his chances of survival. Scabs had formed on the third-degree burn, which started halfway down the back of Trinket's head and covered half of his back, according to volunteer Melody Gritton.

A veterinarian began treating the kitten for the burn and a severe upper respiratory infection and a volunteer was recruited to foster Trinket and provide round-the-clock care, Paws for Life Utah says. In addition to getting a regimen of antibiotics to fight infections, the cat is kept in a high-humidity environment to facilitate skin healing, and wears a sweater to protect the new skin.

"He's just been so loving through this whole ordeal," Cathy Boruch, the executive director of Paws for Life Utah, said Thursday. "He's the most loving, sweetest cat. He's playful and happy."

Trinket, who is about 6 months old, still has more treatment ahead but, barring any infection, is expected to recover completely. Boruch said the cat could be available for adoption in a month or so.

Paws for Life Utah is asking for donations to help cover Trinket's ongoing treatment, which has cost more than $1,000 to date, and provide help for other animals.
