The House passed legislation Monday that would make it illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 14 and would require parental consent for youth over that age.

Rep. LaVar Christensen, R-Draper, said he modeled his bill, which underwent numerous revisions, after a similar law in Idaho. The bill closes the door to cases where, he said, parents have been getting tattoos on their children as young as six months old.

The bill, HB143 (second substitute), passed the House 50-24 and goes to the Senate for consideration.
