A Taylorsville man was in jail Wednesday after allegedly throwing his girlfriend's Yorkshire terrier puppy to its death from a third-story apartment balcony during a domestic dispute.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the 20-year-old man and the woman, familiar to officers from an earlier verbal dispute call Tuesday night, began arguing again just before 1 a.m. Wednesday inside their unit at the Fairstone at Riverview Apartments, 762 W. Sunny River Road.

The woman had left the apartment, descending the steps to ground level, when the man shouted at her from the balcony, "Take your dog with you," and threw the animal at her.

The dog hit the concrete below and died.

UPD officers responding to a 911 call arrived just as the boyfriend, having picked up the dead pet and put it in his car, attempted to drive away from the scene.

The officers stopped and arrested him, booking the man into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of cruelty to animals, tampering with evidence and domestic violence.
