West Valley City • When Juan Diego's Monique Mills hit a 23-foot 3-pointer with four seconds left in the third quarter, the senior kept her follow-through frozen for a couple of extra seconds to relish the moment.

There are plenty of moments from this season for Mills and her Soaring Eagle teammates to cherish as well — starting with a Class 3A state championship and unbeaten season capped by Saturday's 67-47 win over Morgan at the Maverik Center.

As usual, it was the play of twins Monique and Dominique Mills that was at the heart of Juan Diego's success. Monique finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Dominique had 16 points and 11 boards.

In the second quarter, Juan Diego (23-0) got some separation from the Trojans when Monique Mills grabbed a steal and fed Becca Curran for a bucket with 3:25 on the clock. That started an 8-1 run than expanded what was a one-point lead further.

The first double-digit advantage for the Soaring Eagle came when Dominique put back her own miss with 5:09 left in the third to make it 34-23.

"Both of them played their butts off, they made this happen," said Juan Diego first-year coach Josh Archuleta. "They were the leaders this year. They made all this possible."

"I honestly thought we got the looks we needed, but the ball just didn't find the bottom of the net today for us," said Morgan coach Kade Morrell, also in his first year. Morgan (16-9) was led by Savanna Brooks' 14 points and 10 points from Ali Tonks.

"The Mills sisters played very well this year and their confidence helped build the confidence of the girls around them," added Morrell, whose squad lost to Juan Diego three times this season. "I think that was a big deal for them."

Ann Nelson scored 10 points for the champions.. The junior center hit five free throws in the last 1:21 of the first half.

"I know a lot of the girls were just a little bit nervous, but we knew if we played to our game plan we would finish strong," Nelson said.

It is the first state championship in girls' basketball for the 15-year-old school from Draper, which has won state crowns in every other team sport except volleyball.

The victory also cemented a bittersweet bond between Archuleta and senior Sarah Christensen. In her only non-start of the year — with Anna Ewoniuk inserted for a defensive trap scheme designed for Morgan — Christensen came off the bench for six points.

Archuleta's mother died in January in her fourth attempt to beat breast cancer. Christensen's mother died last year from a cancerous brain tumor.

"After my mom passed away, I couldn't imagine a better end to this season," said Archuleta, whose team and fans wore pink shirts in honor of Juanita Archuleta.

"It's sad, definitely sad. I visited her this week and told her everything about it," said Christensen of her mother, Janine. "I'm just happy now. She'd be so proud." —
