Mutual dislike turned to a heated argument and then gunfire early Wednesday, leaving two men dead in a case of murder-suicide inside an Orem home, police say.

Police Lt. Craig Martinez said the incident was first reported in a 911 call about 5:40 a.m. made from inside the home in the area of 1000 North and 500 East. Officers arrived to find the bodies of the shooter, 24-year-old Riley Paul Mecham, and his 64-year-old victim, Anthony "Holden" Sorenson, inside the residence.

Martinez said Meacham used a shotgun to kill Sorenson, then switched to an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to kill himself.

Sorenson was the live-in boyfriend of Mecham's grandmother, who also lived in the home.

Martinez said Mecham's relatives were in the home at the time of the shooting and were being interviewed by police.

The men, who reportedly had a long-running dislike for each other, had gotten into a verbal argument over undisclosed matters just prior to when Mecham allegedly grabbed the shotgun and opened fire, police said.

Martinez declined to reveal further details, since the investigation was ongoing, but he did confirm both weapons had been recovered from inside the home.

Mecham's criminal record in Utah is limited to a 2009 misdemeanor conviction for possession of drug paraphernalia, court records show.
