A Smithfield man died Tuesday night, three days after police believe he shot his girlfriend before turning the handgun on himself.

Christian A. Emerson, 26, had been on life support since the shooting. North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes confirmed Wednesday that he died.

About midnight Saturday, a passerby found Emerson and a deceased Amanda Lee Hoyt, 26, of North Logan, inside a parked car near 1830 E. Canyon Ridge Drive in North Logan. The passerby reportedly called 911 and removed a handgun from the car as a precaution until officers arrived.

Police said Hoyt was dead at the scene from multiple gunshots. Emerson, found slumped behind the wheel, was rushed first to a local hospital and then flown to a Salt Lake-area hospital.

Detectives say it appears Emerson, who had been dating Hoyt, shot the woman and then himself.

Investigators are still interviewing people and conducting forensic testing on the car before officially determining if Hoyt and Emerson's deaths were murder-suicide, Hawkes said.
