A Spanish Fork woman accidentally shot herself in the stomach while trying to keep a gun safe from her grandchildren.

The 55-year-old woman's grandchildren were coming over to her home near 200 S. Villa Circle. Concerned about a 22-caliber revolver in the home, she wanted to secure the gun in a closet — only for it to accidentally go off while she was doing so Saturday afternoon, said Spanish Fork Police Officer Tyler Beddoes.

The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m.

A relative in the home called 911, and the woman was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in serious condition. The bullet hit her right above her belly button, but did not exit, so officers are unsure of the extent of her injury, Beddoes said.
