A 57-year-old woman's apparent decision to cross a dark and busy South Salt Lake Street against the light ended with her death, police say.

Salt Lake City police spokesman Gary Keller said the woman, whose name remained unreleased Tuesday as efforts continued to reach her next of kin, also was wearing dark clothing when she stepped into a crosswalk at 3300 S. 900 West, just after 10 p.m. Monday.

Police know she was hit moments later by a Nissan Altima, and on Tuesday they were trying to determine if she also may have been struck by a van.

No citations had been issued, but the incident remained under investigation.
