Logan • Utah State made history Saturday night.

The wrong kind of history.

Deondre Parks scored five of his 17 points in overtime, leading South Dakota State to a 68-65 victory over the Aggies in the final game of the World Vision Classic at the Spectrum.

The loss was Utah State's first in its own tournament since 1971. The Aggies had won 50 straight such games before losing to the Jackrabbits.

David Collette led Utah State with 19 points. Jalen Moore added 14.

Trailing by 15 with 5:45 left in the second half, Utah State tied the game on Darius Perkins' floater with 10.4 seconds remaining.

South Dakota State had two shots to win in the final second and missed both, but the Jackrabbits dominated early in overtime. They built a 68-61 lead and outlasted USU.

The game matched teams who were riding winning streaks.

Utah State had won three in a row, including victories over Cal State Bakersfield (57-56) and Idaho State (69-56) in this tournament.

Meanwhile, South Dakota State had won six consecutive games since a 71-58 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 30. Like the Aggies, the Jackrabbits defeated Idaho State (75-72 in overtime) and Bakersfield (53-49) this week.

In the tournament finale, Utah State got off to a blistering start.

After Zach Horstman gave South Dakota State a quick 2-0 lead, the Aggies scored 11 straight points over the next five minutes. The run was highlighted by outstanding defense.

The Jackrabbits failed to convert 10 straight possessions, including eight missed shots, a turnover and an offensive foul.

Significantly, Utah State pounded the glass and did not allow any second shots — something that has been a problem throughout the season.

"That's our biggest Achilles' heel — still," coach Stew Morrill said after Friday night's win over Idaho State. "If we get to conference and still have that problem, we've got major problems."

Despite the early deficit, however, South Dakota State charged back.

After Collette picked up his second foul and left the game with 5:47 left in the half, the Jackrabbits took a 24-22 lead on back-to-back baskets by Cody Larson.

It was 27-24 when the Aggies again turned to their defense. They held South Dakota State to only one free throw in the final 3:30 and worked their way back into a 28-28 tie at the half.

Moore had seven points at intermission to lead Utah State, which was 0-for-7 from the 3-point line.

In the second half, South Dakota State grabbed a 40-33 lead following a pair of 3-point shots by George Marshall and a Parks' jumper.

After Utah State got as close as 40-37 with 12:25 remaining, the Jackrabbits seemingly took control with a 9-1 run. But the Aggies rallied to force overtime.

Utah State now takes a six-day break for Christmas before returning to action against Wayland Baptist on Saturday night.
