St. George • A mental competency hearing has been set next month for a teenager from a small southern Utah city accused of killing his neighbor.
The Spectrum of St. George reports that 5th District Judge John Walton said Thursday that a pair of forensic psychiatrists submitted differing opinions about the mental state of 18-year-old Joshua David Canfield, of Toquerville. One ruled he was competent to stand trial. The other concluded the opposite.
Canfield is accused of killing his 58-year-old neighbor, Geraldine Bommarito, in March. Police say he stole the victim's car and tried to use stolen collectible coins to buy gas. He was found the next day alongside the burned car.
Canfield's attorney, Edward Flint, says his he didn't know a second doctor had found his client not to be competent until he heard about it in court.
