As the Panthers Holiday Classic tournament began, the Ray Hale Fieldhouse at West High took on a bit of a retro look.

For one thing, Hale himself was on hand. And the gym took on a feel of 1948, when Hale was on the team, as the Panthers wore replica uniforms from that year.

And West was playing East, although these days, the two oldest Salt Lake high schools get together on the basketball court once a year.

The one thing that was likely much different Thursday was that the West players had 7-foot-2 defender Mark Jackson to attack. But the Panthers were successful enough, despite Jackson's seven blocked shots, to pull out a 53-43 quarterfinal victory.

"It's still a rivalry. It's not as big as it was back then, but it's still big to us," said West senior Riley Kenner, who scored 15 points. "It's something we take very seriously."

Kenner and his twin brother Dallyn, who also scored 15, led the charge against Jackson in the middle.

The ventures in the paint often were unsuccessful, but West (4-4) gradually pulled away, starting in the middle of the second quarter. A basket from Panthers senior Henry Munson broke a 14-14 tie, and a quick six-point run was capped by a wild, back-to-the-basket layup from Dallyn Kenner.

East (3-3) bounced back with four points from Jackson, who finished with a game-high 17, but the hosts retaliated by scoring the last five points of the half for a 25-18 lead.

"I think the twins are great, and they kind of showed that. They don't run a ton of stuff offensively, a lot of motion stuff, but they really play well together," East coach Skip Lowe said. "It's a real learning curve for us. We've got some younger guys, with only two seniors, but we're using the preseason to bounce us into region."

West coach Mike Matheson's squad got a pair of key 3-pointers from 6-foot-5 senior Marty Cloward in the second half. Matheson credited Cloward's outside game in helping draw Jackson away from the goal as the Panthers extended their lead.

The host school will play in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal Friday — and maybe with the same retro West jerseys.

"They were Big 9 league champions back in 1948, so we got a yearbook and looked at the photos so we could design some throwback jerseys," Matheson said. "We lost the one game we wore them last year. We've won both this year, so we might have to wear them some more." —
