A 4-year-old West Valley City boy and his mother were killed, and another adult was hurt, during a head-on collision in Salt Lake County on Friday morning.

The accident occurred on State Road 111 (Bacchus Highway) at 10800 South just before 6 a.m., when a northbound passenger car — which was on the wrong side of the road — collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck, according to South Jordan Master Officer Sam Winkler.

A 31-year-old woman, Rashelle Meguerditchian, and her 4-year-old son, Zaven Meguerditchian, were in the car.

The child died and the mother was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital in "extremely critical condition," Winkler said. Unified Police confirmed Friday afternoon that Rashelle Meguerditchian later died.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded to fair condition as of Friday evening. There were no other occupants of the truck.

The 4-year-old was in a booster seat in the back seat of the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt. The drivers of the truck and car were also wearing seat belts.

Winkler said that because the car was on the wrong side of the road, the crash took place in unincorporated Salt Lake County, which has jurisdiction over the southbound travel lane. Therefor, Winkler said, the Unified Police Department will be the lead investigating agency for the accident.
