A Murray family's pet died as they escaped their burning home Thanksgiving evening.

Murray Fire Marshal Phil Roberts said eight members of an extended family were in the home when the fire started in the basement. The fire began close to the floor and apparently was electrical, he said.

The fire spread upstairs and was shooting out the windows when firefighters arrived shortly after 7 p.m.

Two females were treated for smoke inhalation, and one was transported to a hospital for observation. A dog in the house died, Roberts said.

The home, near 5800 South and 600 West, sustained about $150,000 in damage, Roberts said.
