Call it a less-scary Halloween alternative, and a chance to meet Salt Lake City police officers and firefighters who dedicate their lives to protecting the public. Oh, and there will be candy.

From 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, the annual Halloween Carnival will be held at the Public Safety Building, 475 S. 300 East. The event is free to the public, though if you have a spare can or two of food to bring along, that will go to help the Utah Food Bank feed the area's hungry.

Police Chief Chris Burbank, who will have a photo booth at the event, which this year will offer treats and activities stretching from the new Public Safety Building, across 300 East, which will be closed to vehicles, and onto Library Square.

Mayor Ralph Becker, members of the City Council, and officials from other city departments plan to help the community celebrate, too.

In addition to the candy and games, the carnival will feature displays and demonstrations by the SLCPD's K-9 unit, motorcycle officers, SWAT and Salt Lake City Fire Department ladder trucks and crews.

Library staffers will offer a storytime in the Children's Library, movies in the auditorium and free books on the plaza; the Natural History Museum of Utah's "Bug Lady," Christy Bills, will hold forth on things creepy and crawly; the Earthwings organization will have a birds of prey presentation; and the American Chemical Society will be making slime for the kids.
